The Puerto Plata Report: news and travel info from the Dominican Republic's north coast

“Sober Hotel” offers serenity in Cabarete

CABARETE—After living on St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands for many years, recovering alcoholic John Fitzgerald found it became overcrowded with people, pollution and drugs. In 1987 John moved to the Dominican Republic and started a swimming pool business.

He soon became aware that there were no English speaking AA groups. Not long after, he rented a small home and started “John’s Recovery Guest House” where he and his sponsor, Mike, began holding local meetings.

That was 20 years ago; since then, John has bought a larger home located on the serene Cabarete Lagoon, where he caters to travelers in recovery.

“This project has been very rewarding,” he says. “Helping others has helped me to stay sober and to stay on my path to recovery.”

One of the most important things John learned during this adventure is to make his guests feel relaxed, safe and comfortable from the moment guests arrive. He meets them at the airport and brings them directly to the guest house.

“Come join the serenity in paradise,” he says. “We want your stay with us to be unforgettable, and hopefully, just the first of many.”

Cabarete town is about three hours by road from Samana, too far to travel I’m afraid. I have no idea about AA in Samana, I doubt if there is an English meeting, if any.

I am a single woman who wanted to travel south this winter but none of my friends were available to join me. I really wanted to go but it is a little scary to do it alone. The last thing I wanted was to be stuck on an all inclusive resort for 1 week. I like to move around:) A friend suggested I google recovery or sober vacations and John’s came up. I am coming next week and feel really excited at the propsect of daily AA meetings and the wonderful international fellowship that AA provides. Thanks JOHN!!!!! I will post more after I get back:)

    AA meetings at John’s:

Mon. Wed. Friday at 4 pm. This plus Sunday morning at 8 and our regular Tue. Thur. Sat. at 12 noon. Will now give us a meeting every day. This will allow anyone who wants to do a 90 in 90 a chance to. Plus we can talk about a step meeting. Soon there will be speakers dropping in so this is another step forward with our meetings. J F
